BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to promote khadi, the State Government on Thursday decided to offer 10 per cent discount on khadi garments in the State. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.During festivals and special occasions, the Khadi Commission announces 20 per cent discount. With the new rebate, discount on khadi items will reach 30 per cent. The meeting also decided that assistance will be provided to improve the quality and efficiency of hand spinning wheel used by the Khadi Societies. This will boost production and, therefore, income.The Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB) will be assigned the task of studying the khadi sector in Orissa and suggest improvements. The coverage of its study will include 40 khadi societies, their functioning, products and their quality, market linkage, design as well as art.In 2010-11 fiscal, khadi items estimated at Rs 71 lakh were produced and the total trading stood at Rs 88.1 lakh. Industries Minister Raghunath Mohanty, Khadi and Village Industries Board Chairman Nagendra Pradhan, Chief Secretary BK Patnaik and Industries Secretary T Ramachandru were present.
