Washington: The bomb attacks in Mumbai were 'senseless acts of violence' that the US condemns in the strongest possible terms, the US State Department said on Tuesday.
Spokesman Sean McCormack said the US had been in touch with the Indian Government and would provide whatever assistance requested by New Delhi.
A senior US Democrat termed the multiple blasts in Mumbai as a 'tragic outcome of the civilised world's struggle with terrorism' and said he would appeal to the government to make every resource available should India ask for assistance in investigation.
Condemning the blasts, Tom Lantos, a member of the House of Representatives, said: "It is the tragic outcome of the civilised world's struggle with terrorism that the world's largest democracy should be subjected to such attacks."
Should the Indian Government ask for assistance with the investigation, he would appeal to the US administration to underscore the importance of the ties between the two countries by 'commiting every available resource to get to the bottom of this latest outrage', Lantos said.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai also condemned attacks that killed over 100 people in Mumbai, saying Afghanistan had suffered from terrorism for years.
"This terrorist act is shocking and despicable. It is aimed at killing innocent civilians and I condemn it in the strongest terms," Karzai said in a statement. The Afghan people sent their sympathies to the people of India, he said.
