Women's reservation bill soon: PM
He said the Government was committed to ensuring reservation for women in legislatures and a bill in this regard would be passed soon.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said that the UPA Government will ensure that women's reservation bill is passed at the earliest.

"Our Government remains committed to ensuring reservation for women in state assemblies and Parliament. A bill in this regard will be passed as soon as possible," Singh said in the Rajya Sabha.

Telugu Desam member Vanga Geetha, who is among the 58 Rajya Sabha members who will retire on April 2, had requested him to give an assurance in this regard.

Praising the contribution made by the retiring members, the Prime Minister hoped they would continue to serve the nation with the same zeal and determination.

"Some of them have been re-elected and some are likely to be re-elected. But there are some who will not be re-elected. I do not believe this will be the end of their careers," Singh said.

Meanwhile, President APJ Abdul Kalam in February had said that the Government will make "every effort" to see that 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislatures is made "possible in the near future".

Noting that the Government was actively engaged in reviewing and streamlining policies and programmes for the North East, he had said that a new industrial policy for that region would be announced shortly.
