PARADIP: Hit by poverty, a divorcee of Gobindpur village under Biridi police limits allegedly tried to sell her one-year-old son for ` 1,000 to a person of the same locality on Monday. The 21-year-old woman, Jhunulata Muduli, tried to sell her infant to a person from Kishorenagar in Cuttack district, who agreed to take her son for a decided amount. As the news spread, the sarpanch of Biridi and aganwadi workers rushed to the village and prevented the sale.  Badkhanditya Sarpanch Balaram Mallick said Jhunulata was leading a pathetic life with her parents after she was divorced. With no money to make ends meet, she decided to sell her son. However apprehending police action, the prospective buyer approached Balaram Mallick to ascertain the legal position. Meanwhile, Zilla Parishad member Bidhan Jena alleged that non-implementation of anti-poverty programmes and irregularities in the development works force poor people to opt for such extreme acts for a living. He demanded an inquiry into the child sale attempt. Biridi Child Development Project Officer  Sandhyarani Devi said the child could be saved due to the intervention of anganwadi worker Nirupama Nayak. Meanwhile, food, chatua and ` 1,500 have been given to her under the Mamata scheme.
