JD(U) spokesperson and Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Sanjay Singh made a mockery of himself on Friday after he called for a probe and a lie-detector test on former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, but was unable to defend his leader and former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Unsuccessful in putting across his viewpoint and unable to answer questions posed by reporters, Singh fled the scene in a huff after he realised that he had goofed up. Singh had convened a press conference to rebut the comments made by Modi a couple of days ago in which he had accused Kumar of shielding the relatives of former MP Prabhunath Singh in a murder case by transferring it from the police to the CID.

Speaking at the press conference, the JD (U) spokesperson accused Modi of the habit of shielding criminals. To further his point he gave the example of the land grab and firing case of 2012 in Gopalganj in which one person was shot dead. The BJP MLA from Barauli constituency Ram Pravesh Rai and his two sons were accused in the case.

"At that time Modi was the Deputy Chief Minister. He used his power and connections to get the case 426/ 2012 of Gopalganj police station transferred to CID. The case was compromised, and is now lost between the files. The concerned MLA and his sons are now moving scot free," Singh said. The MLC also called for a probe into the entire episode involving the accused Barauli MLA, as well as a lie-detector test on Modi.

At this juncture reporters asked him whether the probe and the lie-detector test should also involve JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar as it was he who held the charge of the Home Department under which the police and the CID also come. Singh fumbled and denied any involvement of Kumar as he was not even in the know of the matter.

This led to a barrage of questions as to how Kumar could not know things going on in his own department and whether he was pressurised by Modi. The reporters also asked whether there would be CBI probe in the matter.

Unable to face the questions and defend his own leader, Singh left the press conference.
