Stone art is the use of hard materials found in the ground for artistic purposes. This can include carving statues, creating jewellery, assembling mosaics and more. Carving art on stones is an ancient practice which has been followed by our ancestors. Many of the historians found out the extinct history while analysing the stone carvings. With the changing times, people have modernised this art. Now a teacher in the North Dinajpur district of West Bengal has been teaching his students to create handicraft items with stones.
Teacher Dilip Kumar Das is a resident of Kaliyaganj in North Dinajpur district. He teaches his students to make novelty items with stones found on the road. With the help of these stones, his students are making decorative pieces and other items. Along with his students, he collects different types of stones of various sizes. The students first clean the stones properly followed by colouring them. With the help of these colourful stones, the students make different types of handicraft items on paper.
With stones on white paper, the students draw various types of attractive flowers, birds and other items. Dilip Kumar Das, a teacher by profession, always emphasises to the students to discover something new besides moral education. Dilip Das said that there are different shapes of stones in nature. “If something new can be discovered with that stone without throwing it away, students will find a new source of income with these stones in the future.” said Dilip Das
Stone carving has often been used to create sculptures, statues, or decorative items. Dilip Das has already gained popularity by drawing different types of pictures using stones. The students interested in painting are taking up this art form with passion. The resources required for this art are also cheap, making it an easy and affordable source of income for many, if successful.
