A level-4 fire broke out at a restaurant in Kamathipura, Grant Road at 2:00 am leaving at least one person dead. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 16 fire engines and 2 lines from a high-rise building were engaged in efforts to extinguish the flame.

“One unknown male person’s charred body was found in the bathroom at said premises and was moved to JJ Hospital. Enquiry about any other injured or missing person is in progress,” the municipal body said in a statement.

Visuals of the massive blaze have surfaced on social media showing huge flames emanating from the structure. A nearby mall and a high-rise building were vacated due to flames.

The cause of the fire is not clear at the moment.

In a similar incident Wednesday evening, a massive fire broke out on the 26th floor of the ground-plus-27-floor building in the Goregaon area. The fire was reported at 6:11 pm at Anmol Pride Apartment at Govind Ji Shroff Marg in Mahesh Nagar of Goregaon West on Janu 24.

The exact cause of the fire is yet unknown, but officials said that the high-rise’s fire fighting system was not working when the fire broke out.

Quoting the city’s fire brigade, a PTI report said as many as 33 persons were killed and about 300 injured in over 5,000 fires in Mumbai in 2023. A total of 5,074 fire incidents were reported last year, a rise of 15 per cent over 4,417 such cases in the metropolis in 2022.
