Venugopal deserved dismissal: Ramadoss

New Delhi: Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss on Wednesday recommended the sacking of AIIMS Director P Venugopal because the Centre believed his continuation in the post could "vitiate" discipline in one of the country's premier healthcare institutes.

“He deserved to be dismissed from the job because he had violated conduct rules applicable to government employees by publicly accusing the Government of interfering in the functioning of AIIMS,” Ramadoss said.

" Venugopal gathered faculty, students and outsiders in the AIIMS's auditorium and spoke openly, criticising the Government for allegedly interfering in the affairs of AIIMS. It led to considerable tension in the institute," Ramadoss told the Institute Body meeting in a proposal for Venugopal's dismissal.

Ramadoss cited Rule 9 of the conduct rules, which bars Government employees from making public comments that have the "effect of an adverse criticism of any current or recent policy or action of the Central Government or a state Government".

"In view of Venugopal's conduct, it is proposed that his continuance will vitiate discipline in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) further," Ramadoss told the meeting that passed his proposal for immediate dismissal of the AIIMS chief with three months' salary and allowances.

The proposal was passed by a 12-3 vote, said senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra, one of the 17 members of the institute body.

Two members did not attend the meeting that recorded the dissent of Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Paintal, S S Agarwal and Malhotra, the BJP leader said.
