VELLORE: Vellore Corporation has planned to hire five tractor lorries to supply water to affected areas in the town. According to an official source, the Corporation already has three lorries to supply water. Since, they can’t enter narrow streets, plans were on to hire five tractors. The corporation has allotted `5 lakh for the same and the tender for this would be called for soon. With the temperature rising during summer, individual wells and borewells had gone dry in some of the areas, while the pipeline water doesn’t reach some of the elevated areas. The water level has also gone down in the lakes and rivers, which are the ultimate source for water in Vellore. Yet another problem in pumping water from these lakes and rivers are the frequent power cuts, which reduce the time available for pumping. All these affect the frequency of water supply to the residences of Vellore Corporation and as a result, water is supplied once in eight days. Hence, the Corporation lorries are used to supply water. The hired tractors will be used to transport water to houses situated on narrow streets. “These tractors would make ten trips a day to supply water,” the official added.
