Cairo: Up to 43 people drowned on Friday when a ferry capsized in the Nile river in the southern Egyptian province of Bani Suief, state media reported.

The ferry was carrying a minibus packed with 32 passengers, mostly mourners heading to a funeral across the river. The bus slid off and sank in the river.

The state-run MENA news agency said 43 people died when the ferry overturned in Bani Suief province.

Rescue workers are looking for more victims as five are still missing. Survivors have been transferred to hospital.

The accident took place almost a year after five people drowned when their ferry capsized in the Nile in the suburbs of Cairo.

Transport accidents are common in Egypt and are often blamed on poor maintenance and neglect. But this case in particular was caused by a lax in safety procedures.
