Lucknow: Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy on Wednesday said that polls in Uttar Pradesh would be completed before the expiry of the Vidhan Sabha term on May 14.
After his two-day visit reviewing the situation in UP, Gopalaswamy said that the progress was satisfactory.
"I have discussed the matter and the overall situation in UP with my two colleagues," he added.
He, however, said that the preparation of the voter’s photo identity cards in Lucknow and Faizabad is not up to mark and the process needed to be speed up.
He also said that the central forces for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls would be available.
However, he said that the Commission had not yet reviewed the law and order situation in UP.
When asked whether some extra time would be given to the district magistrates for completion of the voter’s identity cards, he said he would review the situation after January one and decide accordingly.
According to sources, some divisional commissioners, including that of Lucknow, had asked for additional time for completion of the electoral rolls.
On the transfer of officials who had completed three years at one place, Gopalaswamy said it was routine.
