UDUPI: Shri Krishna Janmashtami celebrated in the temple town of Udupi on Sunday was a feast to the eyes of devotees. It was a blend of devotion, art, culture and tradition. Special offerings of Tulasi and Parijath flowers were made to baby Krishna, dressed as ‘Balakrishna’ in a golden cradle. Paryaya Shiroor Mutt pontiff Laxmivara Theertha, known for his creative ideas on decoration, had arranged for a miniature of the high mast mantapa carrying curd pots, to make the idol more attractive.Traditional troupes like ‘hulivesha’ (tiger dance), music bands, dance troupes performed around the city.Social and cultural organisations across the city organised rangoli, painting, singing, Muddu Krishna, Muddu Radha and Devaki Krishna competitions. Thousands of children dressed up as Muddu Krishna participated in the competitions.Dharmasthala Dharmadikari D Veerendra Heggade inaugurated the competitions and donated Rs 1 lakh for the event.Laxmivara Theertha offered Krishnarghya, the holy water in a conch at the Theertha Mantapa at 11.47 pm, followed by ‘Chandrarghya’, offering of milk to the moon.
