Kolkata: Two people, including a nine-year-old boy, were killed and at least six others injured on Thursday as two groups of Trinamool Congress workers opened fire in the Basanti area of South 24 Parganas district.
The deceased were identified as Riyazul Mollah (9), Hasna Laskar (32), a local Trinamool activist. A combat force police constable is among the injured.
Police said the clashes broke out between two groups as they were trying to take control of a local village fair. Initially, both the groups hurled crude bombs and had reportedly resorted to indiscriminate firing. Later, they trained their weapons on police who reached the spot later.
Police have arrested six people so far. 400 live and used cartridges has been recovered from the area. A large contingent of police and RAF were deployed in the area who are conducting raids in neighbouring villages.
Meanwhile, locals carried out a protest with the minor's body on Friday morning alleging police inaction against the culprits. The area has been witness to sporadic incidents of political violence on account of TMC factional fights for quite some time now.
West Bengal chief minister and party chief, Mamata Banerjee, had appealed for peace among all the groups when she visited the region lately.
