In order to prevent mishaps while transporting school children in vehicles like the one in Chennai recently in which a six-year-old girl fell through the hole in a bus and died, all officers attached to the three traffic police stations have been instructed to check school buses plying in the Puducherry region.
Superintendent of Police (Traffic) N T Sivadasan said the inspection will be done both during morning and evening hours periodically and prosecution would be launched against those operating school buses without valid records, including fitness certificates, from the Transport Department.
If any school vehicle was found plying without valid records and without proper mechanical and body conditions, the driver and management authorities of the vehicle would be booked by traffic police under relevant provisions of Motor Vehicle Act and Rules, including detention of the vehicle, Sivadasan said.
