PUDUCHERRY: With the Deepavali festival round the corner, it was brisk business for most shops on Sunday. However, fireworks vendors said that sales were yet to pick up this Deepavali season. They attributed this to various factors like the Supreme Court directions on bursting of crackers and a significant jump in the prices. According to what a fireworks shop owner told Express, customers now prefer fireworks that emit colourful lights rather than a loud sound. But, the vendors expect the sale of crackers to pick up on Monday.Meanwhile, some of the main commercial areas like Nehru Street, Gandhi Street and Mission Street wore a festive look, with hordes of customers bargaining for their Deepavali purchases. Foreign tourists were also seen soaking in the festive mood. A huge rush was witnessed at the PAPSCO, Amudasurabhi and Vanavil outlets.A PAPSCO outlet at a marriage hall in Muthialpet offered sugar at `28 per kg, as compared to the `40 in the open market. The prices of essential items at the outlets of the Amudasurabhi and Vanavil were at a higher level as they were reportedly not provided subsidies by the government. The sweetmeat market--which saw a drop in demand this year--is also expected to witness brisk business by Monday.
