KOCHI: They are cycling for a cause. Tour de Difference which has kicked off from Mangalore to support Indian youth volunteer network ‘Make ADifference’ (MAD) visited Kochi on Sunday. ‘Make A Difference’ is a youth volunteer network that works with underprivileged children in orphanages, street shelters and poor homes to empower them in English language, made possible by Cambridge University Press, their education partner. The English project takes learners from starter to intermediate level using Cambridge English for Schools.Five volunteers cycled to 12 cities covering 4,240 km in the process. The tour which stopped at Mangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Chennai, Vellore, Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore, Thiruvananthapuram, stopped in Kochi on September 18. At every city, a wall-signing ceremony and interaction with the locals are held at the respective MAD centres. Many cycling enthusiasts joined the riders on shorter legs. The aim of the trip is to raise Rs. 100 for every km the cyclists cover to meet the costs incurred by the Mangalore chapter of MAD on Cambridge syllabus textbooks for the 300 children under its wings and to promote MAD and its project and to stress the importance of education.Well-wishers can visit the centres to show their support. Also, those who are cycling enthusiasts, but incapable of doing longer distances, are welcome to join the riders on shorter legs. The tour will conclude at Mangalore on September 23.MAD also has a placements project running. The basic aim of this project is to place the children in the same footing as children from regular homes with regards to experiences and interaction with various walks of life.
