Police personnel from Tamil Nadu and Kerala conducted a joint patrol of forest areas on the border of the two States on Thursday, to check infiltration of Naxal and other anti-social elements. Personnel from Tamil Nadu ‘Q’ branch also patrolled the jungles along with police.
According to the police, the surveillance was conducted following a tip off about the movement of anti-social elements and Naxalites in the forest areas. Police suspect that a few Keralites were involved in manufacturing illicit liquor and growing cannabis. Remand prisoners from Tamil Nadu and Naxalites were allegedly moving in the forest area between Kumily and Bodi Mettu.
Police from both the States reportedly got the tip-off from the intelligence unit and hence the joint operation was conducted.
A team comprising deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Uthamapalayam Stanley, ‘Q’ Branch inspector Arumugham and DSP of Kattapana (Kerala) Jijimon, along with 50 police personnel (from both States), patrolled along Six-mile, Seven-mile, Attapallam and Suranganaru forest areas.Similarly, a team led by additional superintendent of police Selvaraj, patrolled along Egaluthu and Kocharavu forest areas. Another team led by DSP of Bodi Arul Amaran scanned the hills near Thevaram and Ramakalmettu. “Accused from Tamil Nadu are reported to be involved in anti-social activities. A few persons from Kerala also have been manufacturing illicit liquor within the forests. In the future we have planned to conduct the surveillance during festivals in Kerala,” said the police.
