Ramanathapuram: Fishermen association leaders met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday and demanded that the Central Government make arrangements for dredging in some parts of the mid sea to help increase fish breeding grounds without affecting the disputed area at Palk Bay, said Ravichandra Ramavanni, District Congress president during a telephonic conversation. Fifteen fishermen association leaders of Rameswaram, including N J Bose, Jesu and Ravichandra Ramavanni, met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and submitted a petition.
Ramavanni told Express that the fishermen had demanded protection while fishing as they were being targeted by the Lankan navy. They requested Manmohan Singh to take quick action for the early release of the five detained fishermen, who were arrested by Lankan navy on narcotics smuggling charges. They are lodged in Jaffna prison.
The Prime Minister assured them that he would do the needful.
