The heat has reached its maximum in India and shows no signs of going down. In such a situation, the traffic policemen in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu are given pith hats and juice to remain hydrated and active while working under the scorching sun. The heatwaves have increased in India and amid this, the Tirunelveli traffic policemen manage the traffic and avoid congestion on the road. Hence, to avoid dehydration, from March to June, policemen working in the traffic department are given lemon juice and buttermilk to reduce body heat during morning and evening work.
A hat made from paper is provided to protect the head from the sun. Tirunelveli City Police Commissioner Pa Moorthy launched the service of providing fruit juice and pith caps to the traffic police. The event was attended by senior officials. Regarding this, the senior officials said that the effect of the sun has not decreased in Tirunelveli. The constables are also given paper cups, lemon water and watermelons. “Through this, the guards will get some relief from the sun,” said Dr Moorthy.
Chennai Traffic Police have already geared up for the scorching heat in March. Pith helmets and buttermilk sachets were distributed to the traffic police personnel. They will be getting free buttermilk for four months. In March, Chennai City’s additional commissioner of traffic, R Sudhakar inaugurated the buttermilk distribution at the Labour Statue Junction on the Marina Promenade. He handed the buttermilk and pith hats to traffic police personnel on duty.
He said that Rs 38 lakh has been allotted to supply buttermilk to the traffic personnel for 121 days. Every day, reportedly 4,970 packets are distributed to those on traffic duty. The practice of providing buttermilk to traffic police personnel due to extreme heat was introduced in 2012. It has been followed every year since then.
