Chennai: The city is finally waking up to catch the fun behind its bars. Flair or juggling as we call it in the bartending language is fast gripping the fancy of the youngsters. Some have even taken it up as a career option.
The B'Mann School of bartending in Chennai is one of the places that is popularising the “flair” among the youngsters to inoculate the skills of bartending in them.
"Hotel management is just the start to our career, where you learn the basics. If you want to go more deep into the course, you need something that makes you much more than the normal person. Bartending is a course that I preferred, I felt I could make it my career," student of Hotel Management, Gokul says.
Many girls too are attracted towards the flair as they see it as a form of art they could use sometimes in their private bars at home.
Though there are not many bars that employ women bartenders, many girls like Lavanya for one, who is a salsa dancer by profession feel happy displaying their skills at parties and other functions.
"Just because you are a lady and want to be a bar tender people have wrong notions about you which is why some women are thinking twice about coming here. But there are a lot of women out there who have a flair for bar tending," Lavanya, a dancer learning bartending, says.
As far as the bartending is concerned, flair is all about having a good knowledge of the subject. Skills and an attitude are also important. And for the drinkers, shake, juggle, throw and catch only adds that extra fizz to their drinks.
"In the professional term, bartending is an extension of your personality. It is something the bartender displays when he is behind the bar," bartender Rohan Carvalh says.
So bartending is not just about mixing your drinks. It's also about a little bit of showmanship behind the bar.
