Most of us have grown up reading Amar Chitra Katha comics, a wonderful gift by Uncle Pai, who wanted children to understand Indian culture in a fun way. However, as times change, so does the mode of storytelling. With this idea in mind, Amar Chitra Katha (ACK) has decided to venture into the aspect of feature filmmaking to continue their heritage of storytelling. Soon-to-be-released is the animated feature film based on their very famous story titled, ‘Sons of Ram’.
“45 years ago, ACK started the trend of telling stories through comic books. And, now that times have changed and we have transitioned into a digital era, ACK decided to continue the heritage of telling stories, but through a different medium - films,” shares Vijay Sampath, CEO, ACK, and also the executive producer of the film.
ACK has not only decided to contemporise the mode of storytelling, but also the story itself. That’s why the backdrop of the story has elements of Ramayana in it, but the main story is that of Luv and Kush and their emotions.
Explains the writer-director of ‘Sons of Ram’, Kushal Ruia, who is also the creative head, animation at ACK, “The story of ‘Sons of Ram’ is different from the conventional Luv-Kush stories. They are not deities in the film, but regular people and family like all of us.”
‘Sons of Ram’ is a story about Luv and Kush (sons of Rama and Sita), and the relationship they share with each other and their friends and family. It is about how the twins embark upon a journey to re-unite their family, and the adventure that follows.
Giving details about the protagonists (Luv and Kush) of the film, Kushal says, “Since they are twins, usually their characteristics have been shown to be similar. But, I did not understand that concept, and decided to change their attributes a little. In this film, Luv is someone who is patient, analytical and a control freak. But, on the other hand, Kush is spontaneous and the kind who doesn’t look before he leaps.”
Releasing on November 2, the makers of the film are expecting it to be a complete family-entertainer. “In India, people have this perception that animated films are only for children.
While, it primarily appeals to kids, we are trying to make animation films that can be watched and enjoyed by the entire family,” adds Kushal.
And, for this purpose, ACK aims to come out with a feature film every eight-nine months, informs Sampath - two of which are already in the making.
“We are working towards coming out with animation and other feature films based on the ACK and Tinkle comics. Next in line after ‘Sons of Ram’ are films based on popular characters like Suppandi and Shikari Shambu,” shares Sampath.
Sons of Ram (2D and 3D) will hit the screens on November 2 in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.
