KOCHI: Giving fresh hopes for opening up a new corridor to the city, the state government on Wednesday sanctioned Rs25 crore for acquiring land for the widening of Thammanam-Pulleppady Road. The first road in the city to be renovated under the detailed town planning (DTP) scheme, the Thammanam-Pulleppady stretch will open a parallel corridor to the city similar to Edappally-High Court and Sahodaran Ayyappan Roads.
The widening of the road is being implemented in connection with the proposed Metro Rail project. The 3.4kmlong ThammanamPulleppady Road will be widened to 22 metres. Though a total of Rs 22 crore has already been allocated under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, the project was at a standstill owing to the huge funds required for the acquisition of land. However, the idea to include the project under the detailed town planning (DTP) scheme will now help the civic body to complete the project on time. Under the DTP scheme, the civic body will offer benefits like revised floor area ration and transfer of development rights (TDR) to the landowners. The Corporation has already completed the assessment of the total area of land to be acquired in the area.

"The widening of the Thammanam-Pulleppady Road will be completed in two phases. Initially the Padma-Kathrikkadavu stretch will be widened. Once the work is completed, the vehicles plying on the Kaloor-Kathrikkadavu Road will get a direct entry to the MG Road.," said a top Corporation official.
