On a day when Telangana votaries -- the TRS, BJP and CPI -- demanded that the state government pass a Telangana resolution in the Assembly, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Monday made it clear that there was no need for such a resolution as the Centre was pursuing the issue.
Further, there was a possibility of such a motion getting defeated in the House as the majority of the MLAs were against state bifurcation, he said.
As the Telangana issue was a sensitive one, no one could force the Centre to take a decision on it, he said. However, he exuded confidence that the Centre would respond soon on the issue.
“The Centre will consider various aspects of the issue and then arrive at a decision in the interest of the state and the country. I am sure the Centre will soon take a final call on the matter so as to put an end to the prevailing uncertainty,” Kiran Reddy said.
In an informal chat with reporters in the Assembly on Monday, the chief minister said: “I have even told the TRS MLAs that any resolution on Telangana in the Assembly would only create obstacles to their efforts to achieve statehood to the region as majority legislators in the House would oppose the resolution,” he said.
He said the Telangana movement was more intense in 1969 than now. “I was in school at that time. The situation was more intense then. Even Indira Gandhi made a statement in Parliament in 1969 on the issue. Jawaharlal Nehru also visited Andhra Pradesh in this regard,” he added. On the proposed “Telangana March” on September 30, he said the government would take all steps to protect law and order during the programme.
Coming down heavily on the Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (TJAC) chairman Prof M Kodandaram for issuing threats to civil supplies minister D Sridhar Babu, Kiran Reddy said the law would take its own course on the issue.
