New Delhi: The UPA Government is likely to table a bill in the monsoon session of Parliament for the creation of a separate Telangana state.

According to sources, the government is actively considering tabling of the bill in the next session of the House.

The move comes close on the heels of an open challenge thrown at the UPA government by BJP leader L K Advani to move a bill in the coming session of Parliament for creating a separate Telangana state.

An alert Congress is in no mood to let the BJP hijack the issue and is now moving post-haste in a bid to deliver on its election promise to create a separate Telangana state.

Advani said the Congress had made a promise on this in its manifesto for the 2004 Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh.

The party had also entered into an electoral understanding with Telangana Rashtra Samithi, which was formed to spearhead the movement for separate Telangana state.

He accused the Congress of going back on its promise and not taking any steps to create a separate Telangana state in the last two years after regaining power.

"The BJP is always committed to formation of smaller states and it is committed to support the bill on Telangana," Advani told a rally in Hyderabad.

The Congress had in turn came down heavily on the BJP for 'now supporting a separate state' of Telangana in Andhra Pradesh, and asked the Opposition party to refrain from exploiting the sentiments of the people of the Telangana region after ignoring their demand throughout during its association with the TDP.
