THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Raising 85,000 cauliflower and cabbage saplings and distributing it to 5,500 houses and a number of schools is no mean job. Manoj, a teacher at the Government Technical High School in Thrissur has not only been teaching children in the classroom, but has also been giving lessons in farming to the people in Kodungalloor municipality. Manoj’s efforts have been recognised by the Agrifriends Cultural Organisation, which selected him for the Adhyapakashreshta Award, given to the teacher who has given the best contributions to revive agriculture.The Agrifriends Cultural Organisation on Monday announced the fourth Krishipadom Shreshta Awards for individuals and organisations that have shown excellence in agriculture. The awards would be presented on June 5, on the occasion of the World Environment Day. The Gurushreshta Award went to a 106-year old traditional farmer from Paanavelikutti in Alappuzha for his contributions to agriculture. The Karshakashreshta Award was bagged by Ulloor Raveendran.Dania Rose of Holy Angels School here bagged the Vidhyarthishreshta Award for the interest shown in farming as well as research work based on agriculture. The Vidyalayashreshta Award was shared by St Thomas School, MGM Higher Secondary School, Varkala and Lourde Mount School in Vattappara.Kerala Environment and Climate Change Institute director P Sreekantan Nair has been selected for the Harithashreshta Award for his contributions to conservation of nature.The Edava Women’s Association, under the Edava Krishibhavan, that made several value-added products from jackfruit, mushroom and coconut was honoured with the Krishishreshta Award. The Cheriyanad Krishibhavan was honoured for the efforts in paddy cultivation in fallow land and making possible cucumber cultivation and string bean cultivation at Mamprapadathu. The Thazhakkara Krishibhavan in Alappuzha that brought forth women power into agriculture was also honoured.The other awards include Paithrukashreshta Award for ‘Karshakan’ magazine, the Drisyashreshta Award for R Ajithkumar and Madhyamashreshta Award for Deepu Konni of Jaihind TV.The awards would be presented at a function titled ‘Harithayanam’ to be attended by five Ministers- Agriculture Minister K P Mohanan, Cultural Affairs Minister K C Joseph, Tourism Minister A P Anilkumar, Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob and Museums Minister P K Jayalakshmi.A Harithadina procession and an exhibition of agricultural products directly from the farmers would also be held on that day on the Museum premises.
