CHENNAI: Honouring its faculty on Teacher’s Day, the Madras University on Monday announced a slew of incentives for them, including free laptops for every teacher. The measures have been welcomed with glee by the faculty members, who feel that such incentives could attract more talent towards the teaching profession. There are close to 350 faculty members in the university who stand to benefit from the measure.“The Teacher’s Day is also the day when Madras University was founded and this year we are celebrating its 155th anniversary,” said G Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of the varsity. “Being a tech-savvy university, to commemorate this event, free laptops will be soon provided to all faculty members,” he said. According to the V-C, to begin with, all departments are expected to get one laptop each within the next couple of months following which every single member will have an individual notebook. “The university believes that laptops will aid the research activities of the faculty and improve the overall academic scenario,” the V-C said. According to the statistics quoted by Thiruvasagam, Madras University has a high level of citation by the Google Scholar section along with the Universities of Calcutta and Bombay. “Madras University, on an average, publishes 600 papers annually and the numbers are expected to improve with the grant of free laptops,” the Vice-Chancellor said.The Vice-Chancellor also announced that the value of Vikas Patra given to faculties who have completed 25 years of teaching in the university would be raised from `500 to `5,000 within this year. “The University, on the occasion of Teacher’s Day, also honoured 11 of its retired faculty members and six working faculty members who completed 25 years of service.”
