CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) is a major revenue earning department, a position it has retained through the sale of liquor during 2011-12. According to the provisional figures available, TASMAC has netted an all-time high revenue of Rs 18,081.16 crore by registering 21 per cent growth. During 2010-11, the net revenue through liquor sales stood at Rs 14,965.42 crore.The revenue netted by the TASMAC ever since it took over the retail vending of liquor in 2003 is as follows: 2003-04 (Rs 3,639.93 crore), 2004-05 (Rs 4,872.03 crore), 2005-06 (`6,030.77 crore), 2006-07 (Rs 7,473.61 crore), 2007-08 (Rs 8,821.16 crore), 2008-09 (Rs 10,601.50 crore), 2009-10 (Rs 12,498.22 crore) and 2010-11 (Rs 14,965.42 crore).The sale of IMFL during the year 2010-11 stood at 4.8 crore cases which has gone up to 5.36 crore cases during 2011-12. Similarly, the sale of beer which stood at 2.7 crore cases, has increased to 2.84 crore cases during 2011-12.At present, TASMAC has five regional offices at Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem and Tiruchi and 41 IMFL depots function throughout the State. Of the 6,798 retail vending shops, 4,730 are bar-attached. A total of 6,674 shop supervisors and 16,826 salesmen work in the retail vending shops while 1,111 bar supervisors and 4,039 bar tenders work in the bars. TASMAC was established three decades ago in 1983, when the State government took complete control of wholesale distribution of IMFL and arrack, taking over from private parties. TASMAC has been carrying on wholesale distribution of liquor from May 23, 1983 and the retail sale of liquor from November 29, 2003. TASMAC also markets imported foreign liquor and beer products.Private parties engaged in retail vending were said to have been indulging in selling llicit/spurious/non-duty paid liquors. With a view to stop the revenue loss, prevent disputes among private retailers and prevent such retailers from forming cartels among themselves, TASMAC took over the retail vending operations from November 29, 2003.
