Gill also says he will be delighted if India retain the World Twenty20 title.

New Delhi: He dismisses Twenty20 cricket as"time-pass"but Sports Minister M S Gill admits he cannot resist watching it either in his free time.

"This is not batting but time-pass for entertainment. This entire game is something else," Gill replied when asked for his comments on the Twenty20 World Championships that start today in England.

He may not think very highly of the format but Gill says he would be delighted if India retain the title. The former Chief Election Commissioner said he does watch Twenty20 games though not very often.

"I also watch it sometimes in the evening," he said.

Describing himself as "a seasoned cricketer at his level", Gill said he loved the sport.

"My heroes are from the past like Lala Amarnath and Vijay Hazare,"he said.

"This (Twenty20) is neither bad nor great. This is a different game," he added.

Gill said today’s cricketers are a pampered lot who get all the security gear they need to prevent injury breakdowns.

"Today’s cricketers have best available helmets. They wear a number of guards making it almost impossible for the ball to hit and injure them," he said.

"There were no helmets at that time. Players like Vijay Hazare, Lala Amarnath used to play the fastest Australlian bowlers while wearing only cloth-made cap," the Minister added.
