Mumbai: Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen wants to portray the character of a legendary Rani Lakshmibai famed for her bravery so badly that she's decided to produce a film on her life, a news report said on Monday.

Lakshmibai, the young ruler of Jhansi, was a key player in a failed 1857 uprising against British colonial rule. She emerged as a symbol of resistance to British rule before her death at the age of 23 on the battlefield, fighting British soldiers in 1858.

Sushmita told the Mumbai Mirror it had always been her dream to play the warrior queen.

“Every actor has a dream role. Mine is Jhansi,” said Sushmita, who is in discussion with scriptwriters on the project.

“This is my chance to play the one historical character that I most closely empathise with,” she added.

She said wants to make the movie herself because she had a definite vision of how to portray Lakshmibai.

Sushmita added that she would appoint a director in a couple of months, and is likely to begin shooting later this year.

“I've always wanted to play Jhansi Ki Rani. And I don't see my vision being translated to screen by any other producer,” she said.

“This will upset me no end,” she added.
