CHENNAI: Despite the formal end to the Northeast monsoon in December, a sudden spell of rain for half an hour across several parts of the city, took Chennaiites by surprise on Wednesday. Attributed to upper air wind activity, some more spells of rain are forecast in a few parts of interior Tamil Nadu on Thursday as well. Although the mercury touched 31.2 degrees on Wednesday afternoon, most parts of the city saw sudden showers at around 5.30 pm in the evening. Nungambakkam received 11.9 mm rainfall, while Meenambakkam recorded 12.4 mm. The rains were caused by upper air winds over the southern peninsula, said Dr SR Ramanan, regional meteorological director. This could cause more showers in interior parts and a few parts of coastal TN on Thursday too, he added. On Wednesday, several parts, including Royapettah, Kilpauk, Vadapalani, Mugappair, Ambattur, Nungambakkam and T Nagar saw a spell of heavy rains. “Traffic at Sterling Road junction, Nungambakkam came to a halt as impatient motorists, especially two-wheeler riders cut signal lights. Traffic on Haddows Road virtually halted as two-wheeler riders took shelter under the Harrington Road subway. The Nelson Manickam Road-Poonamalee High Road junction was completely jammed,” said a commuter, who works in a private company in Ambattur.“Rains lashed Anna Nagar around 4:55 pm and I was stuck trying to board a bus. Autorickshaw drivers took this opportunity to hike the fare. For a distance of 300 metres, I was charged an exorbitant Rs 40,” said Aparna, an Anna Nagar resident.
