CHENNAI: In a shocking incident that took place in a school located near Broadway in the heart of the city, an irate Class IX student allegedly murdered his teacher on Thursday morning. Police, who arrested the boy, said he was a reserved person and poor in academics and that the teacher had written remarks in his diary summoning his parents.Police said Hindi teacher Uma Maheshwari (42) of Norman Street, Mandaveli, was in Class X on the first floor of St Mary’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School on the Armenian Church campus on Armenian Street, Broadway, with some students when the 14-year-old student entered the class, whipped out a knife that he had hid in a piece of paper and attacked her. The incident happened around 10.30 am. The teacher, working in the school for the past six years, was a relative of former city police commissioner Nanjil Kumaran, while the boy was the son of an employee of a shipping firm, police said.The teacher, police said, had scolded the boy recently when he turned up without completing his homework. Police sources said the teacher had written remarks about the student in his progress report and had allegedly told the boy’s parents that he was poor in academics and that they should either warn him or withdraw him from the school. Police said the boy could have been aggrieved over it.Sources said he first stabbed Uma Maheshwari twice in her neck and slashed her stomach thrice when she attempted to retaliate and raise an alarm. The Class X students in the class, who were shocked at what they witnessed, attempted to catch the boy, police said. But the 14-year-old allegedly threatened to attack them if they came near him. The students raised an alarm and they, along with other teachers, later caught the boy, the police added.The teacher, meanwhile, fell unconscious and soon police was informed. She was taken to a private hospital where she was declared ‘brought dead’, police said. The boy was arrested.
