CHENNAI: Focusing on the role of youth in society and the changes they can bring in all spheres from national policies to cinema, a day-long conference dedicated to India’s young was held at Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College here on Thursday. The World Youth Conference was organised commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Noting that 2 million Persons of Indian Origin are living in the US, and about 100,000 students are present in each other’s country, Jennifer Mcintyre, US Consul General, Chennai, said young people of both countries have an exciting future before them. The conference was organised to recognise the responsibility of society to provide resources for the youth to create history together, and to strive for a better future, said Dr S Narasimhan, principal of the college, and president of the Citizen Consumer Club, which organised the conference. ‘Datin Paduka’ Jaya Parthiban, former senator of Malaysia, urged students to keep alive the “passion to achieve”. Vaishnav Dhwani, the first issue of the college’s quarterly news letter was released by the US Consul General. Jaya Parthiban received the first copy. The Vaishnav Yuva Bhushan, instituted for the first time to honour youth achievers, was presented to Col M Rajiv Menon, commander of the Sivaji Battalion of the OTA. Also present was P Haridas, secretary of the college, Dr MR Vasudevan, conference director, and Rahul, student and organising secretary of the club.
