The Supreme Court on Thursday reduced the death penalty of the convict in the Soumya rape and murder case to a seven-year jail term. The convict - Govindachami - was earlier given capital punishment by the lower courts.
he has been let off on murder charges but his conviction for rape has been upheld.
Soumya, a 24-year-old employee at a shopping mall in Kochi, was raped by Govindachami and pushed out of a running passenger train while she was travelling from Ernakulam to Shoranur on February 1, 2011.
A fast track court in Thrissur in 2012 had awarded death sentence to the accused, considered to be a habitual offender from Virudanagar in Tamil Nadu.
She later died at the hospital on February 6.
The Kerala High Court had upheld the death sentence and the convict had challenged it in the Supreme Court.
