CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation has announced a new action plan to fulfil a recent budget announcement in the electrical department, focusing largely on street lights. This will include 25,000 solar street lights which will be installed within the next six months.In a meeting of the electrical department headed by the principal secretary and commissioner, steps to decrease power consumption by 25 per cent and save 36 lakh units in the coming year were discussed. A smart street light monitoring system is expected to be tendered within 30 days. This will involve remote controlling of the lights and will also indicate when a particular group of lights stop working.Regular tube lights will be replaced by energy saving light bulbs, the tenders for which will be released shortly, said a press release from the Corporation. In order to replace street lights that are not working, 5,000 tube lights will be bought through the ongoing tender process. Also, within three months, existing lights on bridges will be provided with new ballasts which will ensure constant light output even during periods of low voltage.As part of the action plan, 30 hydraulic ladders will be purchased to assist the team of electrical engineers and rusted light poles will be replaced within 45 days.
