It is ideal to have fewer number of political parties in a coalition if accountability is to be ensured, Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan said on Thursday.
Large numbers of parties can hamper administration, discommoding the public, he said. Sankaranarayanan was speaking after inaugurating the year-long 125th anniversary celebrations of the Legislative Assembly here.
Sankaranarayanan said the country will have to address this issue sooner or later as the number of political parties are on the rise.
‘’It’s not that you don’t need parties. The numbers are increasing and this affects development. E M S Namboothiripad once said that on the subject of development, positive thinking was required transcending party politics,’’ he said.
During the past 125 years, Kerala has set myriad models for other states to follow in matters of governance and law enactment, but it is time now for the state to consider what can be done in the next 100 years, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who presided over the function, said.
It is high time that separate laws that still exist for erstwhile Travancore, Cochin and Malabar regions are unified, Finance and Law Minister K M Mani said. He also stressed the important of legal reforms, which is a continuous process.
