Politicians continued to be the target of protestors for the second day when an irate mob did not allow Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and Congress leaders, who had travelled all the way to take part in Cauvery agitation in Mandya, to address a gathering.
The Congress leaders, who blamed the government over the Cauvery row and wanted to save their face by forcing the government to stop the water from KRS, were at the receiving end as they were forced to leave the dais.
Though Cauvery River Protection Committee chairman G Made Gowda and others pleaded with farmers and students to keep calm and allow Siddaramaiah to speak, they continued to raise slogans. They charged the opposition leaders with not backing their 23-day stir and with not prevailing over the Union government to stop release of water.
They protestors even waved slippers and threw placards at the stage while Congress leaders, legislators and their supporters remaining mute spectators. As the situation was about to go out of control, police resorted to a mild lathicharge and ensured that Siddaramaiah and other Congress leaders left the venue under police security.
Congress leaders Siddaramaiah, V Srinivasa Prasad, MP A H Vishwanath and more than 10 legislators had to leave the venue.
Siddaramaiah, who led more than 2,000 Congress workers and supporters in vehicles to Mandya accompanied by a few folk artists was initially stopped by protestors in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. They demanded that Siddaramaiah and others return accusing that they had no concern are made no efforts to stop water to Tamil Nadu. Amid slogans shouting, Siddaramaiah managed to take a seat on the dais hoping protestors may calm down with the intervention of Made Gowda.
The situation went out of control for some time as Sri Rishikumar Swamiji removed the mike and urged the Opposition leader and others to leave the dais where Made Gowda was on fast. Former Union Minister and veteran leader V Srinivasa Prasad managed to address the protestors and clarified that they were there to support the cause of farmers in Cauvery basin. He also criticised the Prime Minister’s decision and said they were above the party as the release of water would affect the livelihood of farmers and also people of the region.
The striking students advanced towards stage urging the organisers not to allow Siddaramaiah to address them. Sensing trouble, he and his supporters left the venue.
The protestors did not allow former Minister and MLC M C Naniah to address the gathering.
Gowda Apologises
Cauvery River Protection Committee, chairman G Made Gowda apologised to Opposition leader Siddaramaiah over the behavior of a few protestors who forced the Congress leader to leave the dais.
Speaking over phone to Siddaramaiah, Gowda said the Congress is not to hurt by the behaviour of the activists. He requested Siddarmaiah him to extend his support to Cauvery agitation.
