Shift RTO from Thimmayya Bhavan

The Field Marshal Cariappa and General Thimmayya Forum on Thursday submitted its fourth appeal to the Transport Department requesting it to shift the RTO office from Thimmayya Bhavan, where former General of Indian Army Thimmayya was born.

During a press conference held here on Thursday, members of the forum said that the department had ignored its previous three appeals on the issue.

However, when the forum presented its fourth appeal on Thursday, the members were told that there is a lack of political will in the region regarding the Thimmayya Bhavan in Madikeri, said B A Nanjappa, convenor of the forum.

In 2006, the state government had granted `1 crore for the mansion spread over 2.6 acres to be converted into a memorial dedicated to Kodandera Subbayya Thimayya. “We have been appealing since January this year. But there has been no response from the RTO office despite orders from the Transport department,” the forum convener said.

He added that the mansion is currently in a dilapidated condition and needs renovation work.

“We have already appealed thrice with the Transport Commissioner and the Principal Secretary to Transport Minister but with every order, the RTO officials have newer excuses to give,” noted Nanjappa.

He said that legal remedy would mean that the case will be in court for years together. “We are waiting for the forthcoming elections in the hope that newly elected leaders will look into the issue,” said Nanjappa.

Nanjappa said that a meeting with the district in-charge minister is scheduled in November and he hoped that things will move forward from there.

The mansion is where General Thimmayya who was also known as ‘Timmy’ was born. It was acquired by the RTO in 1972.

The state government has already constructed a building for the RTO in Madikeri, but despite this the officials have refused to relocate, said a release issued by the forum said.
