New Delhi: Shemaroo Entertainments anti-piracy squad along with two officers from S S Branch of Crime Branch, Lonare and Jamadar, raided two stalls at Bhandup (W), Mumbai and seized 9261 DVDs and VCDs worth Rs 30 lakh.
Four people were arrested including Dhiraj Tiwari, Anil Bodke and Mohhamed Sahbaaz, the owner of the stalls.
Pirated DVDs and VCDs are being sold in every corner of the main railway station as well as the main commercial area.
However, there was no strict action from the government to stop this piracy move. This certainly is an area to ponder, as to why is the government behaving in this manner.
Its not just only in Mumbai, pirated CDs are openly sold in posh South Delhi area. Recently In a major crackdown, the Delhi police busted a racket dealing in supply of pirated CDs in the Capital with the seizure of pirated VCDs and DVDs of the films, like Dhoom 2 and Vivah from the Sarai Kale Khan area of South Delhi.
In all, 2655 pirated MPs, VCD and DVDs of films like Gangster, Jaanemann, Fanaa, Apna Sapna Money Money, Naksha and many others were recovered from one Ganesh Chaudhry, who supplied these CDs from his residence.
Delhi’s Palika Bazaar is another den of pirated CDs and VCDS.
According to sources as many as 200 shops in Palika Bazaar deal in such pirated CDs. And each retailer makes around Rs 5 lakh per month from this grey business.
Every year, the government loses Rs 1,700 crore in revenue because of the booming film piracy business.
The film piracy trade also spawns other activities. For instance, the inlay cards that are meant to be pasted on the pirated CDs, are printed much in advance.
