RAICHUR: The decks have been cleared for Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda to enter the upper house, as senior BJP leader N Shankarappa has decided to resign as MLC. Shankarappa will submit his resignation on Wednesday. He was asked to resign as MLC to pave the way for the CM during the latter’s visit to Sindhanur taluk for a function.On Sunday evening, state BJP chief K S Eshwarappa called Shankarappa and suggested that the latter resign, during a telephonic conversation. During the CM’s visit, former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa was also present. While flying from Sindhanur to Hospet, both Yeddyurapppa and Gowda suggested to Shankarappa to resign. Hence, Shankarappa, known for his neutral stand in party circles, was selected to pave the way for Gowda.Shankarappa said that he readily agreed to resign as a disciplined party worker.A former government employee in the district court, he completed a law course at the undergraduate level and served as a lawyer for thirty years. Hailing from Raichur, he was in erstwhile Jan Sangh, and was a strong follower of the RSS.He has been with the BJP since its inception. It is said that Shankarappa has been assured of being appointed as the state backward classes commission chairman.
