New Delhi: This year's IPL is more about explosive batting, first it was Chris Gayle and then it's David Miller, but things were not the same with last year's IPL.
IPL 5 saw everything from a drugs scandal to sting operation, but one event that fetched a whole lot of negative publicity for the tournament was Shah Rukh Khan's infamous fight with a security personnel. Following the controversy, Mumbai Cricket Association imposed a five-year ban on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) owner Shah Rukh Khan.
It has been around one year since the ban and the authorities don't seem to dilute down their decision, but isn't there any need to review the pronouncement?
Shah Rukh Khan is definitely one of those faces who have helped IPL in becoming a brand name. It was his star power that brought more celebrities to the cricket carnival of Indian Premier League. Today, a lot of film actors and celebrities are involved with the business of IPL, which is significantly contributing in making it a profitable venture and the innovator behind all this has been left out of the Wankhede stadium.
Raj Thackeray's recent statement on Wankhede decision might be imbibed with political reasons but it makes sense. Shah Rukh Khan is the owner of KKR and he should be allowed to travel with his team. His presence is valuable for the stadium management as well, who can boast of special attraction. He is not the silent types who will keep a straight face during every phase of the match, which in turn enhances the entertainment quotient of the league.
If the managers of IPL can promote their opening ceremony as an event where Shah Rukh Khan performs then the man deserves privileges as well. It shouldn't been a one way process where the top bosses of IPL try to throw everything on the local authorities. We all know how much influential is BCCI in getting its dictate done.
Trust me, it's not like demeaning the value of the security person who stopped Shah Rukh Khan from going wayward in 2012. The officials were just doing their job, but now the stance has been made and the actor also expressed his regret over the unwanted fiasco, further the MCA has also presented its just side. Basically, the point has been conveyed, so shouldn't the situation be revisited in order to make new plans. After all, this is what a good judiciary system does.
This is hypocritical to enjoy SRK's dance moves at one stadium and supporting his ban at the other. IPL is meant to provide wholesome entertainment and it is difficult to find anyone better than Shah Rukh Khan at it.
Allowing a team to play at a stadium without its patron is like not accepting the team in its entirety. If the owner is wrong then how could the team be justified, especially if there is nothing hidden about the whole fighting episode.
If you are making money on his name, then you should also re-consider his case. Don't you think one year ban is enough punishment for Shah Rukh?
