The produce is aimed at the huge demand for vegetables during Onam. Flowers are cultivated eying the Onam market.“We can harvest almost all vegetables except banana as it is not ripe. The initiative was started with an initial investment of Rs 40,000 each by eight members of the unit. Now, it has crossed Rs 3 lakh. We expect a turnover of nearly Rs 5 lakh,” said ward member Anilkumar, who has been providing assistance to the initiative. “We have followed traditional methods incorporating technical directions from the Agriculture Department,” he said.The team leader of the Kudumbashree unit, Shyla Sarasen said the idea of vegetable farming was conceived six months ago keeping the Onam season in mind.“The project was carried out with the financial assistance under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). The vegetables were cultivated organically. Besides, we have grown yellow and white marigold plants which are now ready to blossom,” she said.Udayamperoor panchayat president Ajitha Salim has said the group will be awarded for their endeavour at a function on the ‘Thiruvonam’ day where the best farmers in the panchayat will be facilitated.She said the initiative is praiseworthy and the panchayat will be ready to render help to such initiatives. “We will encourage these kind of organic farming in our area with the help of Agricultural Department.
