The blasts came ahead of June 22 peace talks between the government and representatives of ULFA.

Guwahati: Four near-simultaneous explosions rocked Assam's Nagaon distict late on Thursday night, injuring 34 people, mostly civilians, police said on Friday.

"There were four separate but near simultaneous bomb or grenade attacks in different parts of the state late Thursday night," Assam Police Chief D N Dutt said.

"We are trying to ascertain the identity of those responsible for the attacks," he said. None of the terrorist groups operational in the state immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Dutt said 21 civilians were injured when a grenade was hurled at a busy market at Islampur, 80 kilometers north of Gauhati, Assam's capital.

Five passers-by were hurt when a bomb exploded near the Golokganj police station close to the border with Bangladesh in western Assam, about 300 kilometers from of Guwahati.

Three people were injured in the nearby Dhubri town, and four people - three civilians and a policeman - injured in Nagaon, 120 kilometers east of Guwahati, said N Choudhury, a local police official.

The blasts came ahead of June 22 peace talks between the government and representatives of the United Liberation Front of Asaam (ULFA).

The ULFA has demanded the release from prison of five of its top leaders to facilitate the group to meet and take a decision on holding direct talks with New Delhi.

"We have already recommended their release to the authorities in Delhi. We want peace back in the state," said Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, the state's government head.
