A rail passenger’s selfie in Maharashtra’s Kalyan led the police to resolve the mystery behind the death of a man. A thief — Akash Jadhav — who tried to snatch the passenger’s phone out of his hand on a moving train, was captured on the video he was filming.
Zahid Zaidi, the passenger, was recording a video of himself when the thief attempted to snatch his phone. Though Jadhav failed in his attempt, Zaidi was able to capture his face on the video, an NDTV report said.
Zaidi sought help from the police by posting the video on social media, which later went viral and caught Kalyan Railway Police’s attention. Jadhav was then arrested by the cops.
“On Tuesday, we arrested a suspect who had prior cases registered against him in Thane. We recovered a second mobile phone from him,” railway police officer Pandharinath Kande was quoted as saying. Jadhav was asked about where that phone came from.
It was only when the phone was switched on that police got to know about the owner, Prabhas Bhange. A bank employee and resident of Pune, he had gone home for Holi. Bhange died after falling from a moving train on March 25 midnight at Vitthalwadi railway station.
Till this information came to light, the police said they were unware of how Bhange fell from the moving train. It was learnt that Jadhav snatched the phone from Bhange and in a bid to retrieve it, he fell down from the train, they added.
“He was travelling from Kalyan to Pune. At Vitthalwadi station, Jadhav snatched his phone. To get his mobile phone back, Mr Bhange tried to get down from the train and fell to his death,” the official said.
A case against the accused, Akash Jadhav, has been registered.
