Guwahati: Security has been tightened across Assam on the eve of Independence Day with additional forces deployed at sensitive locations to foil any attempt by militant outfits to create disturbances.
"We have deployed additional forces. Besides, there is some intelligence feedback about attempt by the anti-talk faction of ULFA to trigger blasts in upper Assam districts," State Director General of Police JN Choudhury told PTI on Tuesday.
The state police is coordinating with other security agencies to maintain peace and thwart attempt by militant groups to disrupt peace on the day.
A 'red alert' has already been sounded across the state, which witnessed a few IED blasts targeted at security personnel during the past couple of weeks, particularly in Goalpara district. The anti-talk faction of ULFA has called a customary state-wide bandh on the day.
"The upper Assam belt is under special scanner as our intelligence feedback suggest serious attempt by the ULFA to create disturbances there. We are ready to deal with the situation and foil any such attempt," he said.
Some small teams of ULFA cadres are still on run in the upper Assam districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar and Jorhat, he said adding last night one ULFA militant was arrested from Tinsukia and some IEDs were seized from him.
On measures taken in Guwahati, Choudhury said police have undertaken massive security checks besides deploying additional forces in the city.
Traffic to and from the city are being checked to ensure that miscreants are not able to sneak in. Checks are also being conducted at parking places to prevent any untoward incidents, he added.
