In the wake of the implementation of the Food Safety Act and inspection in hotels, courses in food safety is the need of the hour Cusat is set to introduce an MFSc course in Seafood Safety from September.
The course, the first of its kind, was sanctioned recently by the University Grants Commission, under the ‘Innovative Programme - Technology and research in interdisciplinary and emerging areas’.The two-year (four-semester) programme with 20 seats is interdisciplinary in nature. The course aims at developing manpower specialised in managerial skills that is in demand by the seafooAd industry.
Also, the course aims to extend state-of-the-a rt research opportunities in emerging vistas related to seafood trade, seafood quality assurance and international trade.
It offers employment opportunities in seafood production, sales, marketing, quality assurance, food safety, total quality management, import and export. The NIFPHTT, Cochin, Ministry of Agriculture and various seafood processing and exporting factories under the aegis of Seafood Exporters Association will collaborate with the programme.
