BANGALORE: He was one of Karnataka’s prominent Gandhians and a freedom fighter. C Satyavrata was fondly remembered on his birth anniversary at an event organised by Karnataka Sarvodaya Mandal on Sunday.Veteran freedom fighter H S Doreswamy paid rich tributes to Satyavrata. He said, “Since his college days, Satyavrata was patriotic and hard working. He fearlessly displayed his willingness to sacrifice his life during the freedom struggle.” “When Gandhiji visited Madras, he was keen on meeting Gandhiji. But, he could not afford Rs 20 for the tickets. Yet, he did not ask anyone for help as, by nature, he was self-sufficient and independent,” remembered Lakshmi (82), wife of Satyavrata and a nature-cure doctor by profession.Satyavrata, who died in March 2009, was a key figure in the Bhoodhan Movement led by Vinoba Bhave. He was best known for his work as a Sarvodaya worker. He also served as president of the Karnataka Sarvodaya Sangha, a Khadi collective. A scholar in Sanskrit and English, he served as committee member of the Gandhi Bhavan in Bangalore. “He had a harsh upbringing. Satyavrata was the 4th child born into a khadi-wearing family. It influenced him to follow Gandhiji’s path and eventually he jumped into the freedom struggle,” said Lakshmi, who only hoped that people remembered the contribution of people like Jayaprakash Narayan and her husband.Writer Vasundhara Bhupati and chairman, Karnataka Sarvodaya Mandal Surendra Kaulagi were present.
