Dubai: Sania Mirza continued her impressive form this year as she moved into the second round of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championship with a straight-set win over Russian Ekaterina Makarova in Dubai.
The Indian ace, who lost in the final of the Pattaya Open, on Sunday continued her impressive form to overpower her Russian counterpart 7-5, 6-2 on Monday night.
Sania, who was given a wild-card entry into this 56-woman tournament, appeared sluggish at the beginning, and Makarova took full advantage by breaking her in the third game.
But once the 87th-ranked Indian's forehand became more consistent, she broke back in the eighth game and then dominated her rival.
Sania will now take on the 16th-seeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi with the winner likely to face the former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic in the third round.
