KOCHI: The Sahodaran Ayyappan Road widening project, that has been going on and off for several years, is facing hurdles yet again. Although the road has an average width of 19 to 22 metres, tarring has been completed only on 15 metres. The current lag has been attributed to the high rate quoted in the separate tender for the remaining part of the road.“We have already completed the major part of the project. A separate tender was called for the remaining portion and the tenders quoted currently are very high. Work will begin as soon as a fair tender is quoted,” said P G Girijadevi, project manager, Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP), which is in charge of the widening plan. With the current delay, the already congested road will witness further blocks leading to severe traffic congestion in Kadavanthra, Vyttila, South Junction and Valanjambalam.Unauthorized parking of vehicles on the roadside due to the absence of bus bays aggravates the problem. Land needed for the bus bays is yet to be acquired. Although the traffic police has been given the duty of handling this, not much has been done.“The land acquisition of the remaining area will commence as soon as the spot verification of the survey numbers is done,” said an employee at the Deputy Collector’s (Land Acquisition) office. The Vyttila Special Tahsildar Office, which is in charge of the said verification, confirmed that the procedure has started.
