CHENNAI: In an effort to make their ward a role model for others, the residents of ward 116 gathered at Mahakavi Bharathiyar Illam, KP Kovil  Street, Triplicane, and had a  healthy  exchange of issues on Sunday with Councillor MGR Vasan. Also present at the event were the respective government officials who deal with various civic issues. This event was organised by Srinivas Young Men’s Association, a neighbourhood organisation in Triplicane, which takes up civic issues. The organisers received complaints from more than 500 people in the ward. The public hearing was moderated by the organisers, who read out the complaints they had received and concerned officials responded to the issues. Some of the issues that hogged the limelight were the menace of cows, dogs and cats; concrete roads, traffic issues, garbage,  water logging, street lights, street cleaning, need for share autos, removal of TASMAC shop in Triplicane High Road and need for bus stops. The cow menace received a unanimous vote from the people who had gathered at the event. TA Sampath Kumar, President of the Association, one of the moderators of the public hearing, said, “More than a lakh people suffer everyday due to some 50 cows, which have made the streets of this  ward as their home. The owners conveniently leave them on the roads. They cause traffic jams as they sit comfortably in the middle of the road. All of  us who live in this area suffer because of them.” Reacting to this public demand, Ramachandran, Assistant Commissioner of Police, said that they were in touch with the cow owners, and had come to an arrangement  that cows should be allowed to roam only after 11 pm and be reined in before 3 am  every day.Sampath Kumar put forward the demand to allow young boys to play cricket on the Marina, as this neighbourhood is close to the beach. To this, Dr V Maithreyan MP, AIADMK, promised to present this issue to the CM for a favourable response. The MP also promised the people of this ward high mast lights around the  Parthasarathy Temple.
