KOCHI: The Periyar Malinikarana Virudha Samara Samithi and the residents associations of Eloor staged a protest march to the Eloor municipal office on Monday morning demanding that the authorities immediately provide pure potable water to the residents of the area. According to the residents, despite Pollution Control Board’s (PCB) directive to the municipal authorities to provide potable water from other protected sources, no steps were taken to ensure the same. “The municipal authorities say that there is no problem with the water which is being presently provided to us,” said Purushan Eloor of the Periyar Malinikarana Virudha Samara Samithi. According to Purushan, this statement is in complete violation of the reports by PCB and Kerala Water Authority (KWA) Quality Control Department. According to the reports, the water provided to the people from Periyar is highly contaminated. “Our protests will continue till our demands are met. We won’t allow the municipal authorities to provide us water which has been certified to have toxic matter in it,” he said. The situation worsened after dead fish were found floating on the river from the region that provides potable water to the people. The KWA Quality Control Department officers had also come and confirmed that the PH value of the water in the Periyar is below two, while the minimum acceptable value is six. K G Joshi, member of Muppathadam ward said that they have also approached the District Collector in this matter but have not received any results till now.
